How firms can get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity in 90 days

A practical 90-day sequence for making company websites easier for AI engines to fetch, understand and cite.

Cited or invisible: a laptop glowing in a modern office at night

Firms get cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity when their websites answer a specific client question in the first sentence, back it with a concrete number, and are easy for a crawler to fetch. Most firms fail on all three counts today. Fixing them takes 90 days, not a rebuild.

Why does this matter more than Google ranking?

Up to 60% of informational searches now end without a click, because the AI answer sits on the results page itself. A firm can rank second on Google and still be invisible if the AI Overview above it cited a competitor, a review site, or a forum thread instead.

Ranking in the organic top ten and getting cited in the AI answer are two different jobs. Most company websites are still built for only the first one.

What actually gets a page cited?

Three things, in order of leverage.

Answer-first structure

Roughly 44% of AI citations pull from the first 30% of a page, and models effectively stop reading past the first 1,500 words. A page titled “Outsourced Bookkeeping for UK SMEs” that opens with “Outsourcing bookkeeping typically costs a UK SME £300 to £800 a month, depending on transaction volume” gets quoted. A page that opens with “In today's fast-moving business environment, bookkeeping matters more than ever” does not.

Standalone facts under their own headings

LLMs quote attributable numbers, not adjectives. “Average month-end close time: 12 working days,” on its own line under its own heading, is citable. The same claim buried inside a paragraph about “our comprehensive approach” is not.

When we cleared an 18,000-transaction bank reconciliation backlog in three days for a UK practice, that number belonged on its own line, not folded into a testimonial paragraph.

Crawlability and freshness

If the bot cannot fetch the page, none of the above matters. Check robots.txt, check that JavaScript-rendered content actually appears in a fetched HTML snapshot, and refresh the dates on cornerstone pages. Stale content drops out of AI answers fast, and AI engines have sent users to closed addresses because nobody updated the page in two years.

Where do the other 85% of citations come from?

Roughly 85% of AI citations come from domains a firm does not own: review sites, comparison listicles, Reddit threads, industry directories and press coverage. A perfect website alone does not earn citations.

Half of GEO work happens off-site: getting listed accurately on relevant industry directories, earning mentions in trusted trade publications, and making sure business-directory and Google Business Profile data match the website exactly.

Classic SEO vs GEO

Classic SEO

  • Ranks in the blue links
  • Optimises keywords
  • Builds backlinks to your domain
  • Measures the click

GEO

  • Gets quoted inside the AI answer
  • Optimises entities and facts
  • Builds mentions on trusted domains
  • Measures the citation

What's the 90-day sequence?

Weeks 1 to 3

Audit crawlability, fix answer-first openers on the five highest-traffic pages, and add Organization and FAQPage schema.

Weeks 4 to 8

Build the supporting content cluster around one commercial page, whether that is bookkeeping, audit prep or payroll bureau. Answer every question a buyer asks across the funnel, so the site becomes the default source of truth for that topic.

Weeks 9 to 12

Fix off-site listings, pursue two or three earned mentions on sites AI engines already trust, and re-test citation rate weekly across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews using the same five client questions.

What does a firm measure to know it is working?

Track citation rate on a fixed list of 10 to 15 real client questions, tested monthly across three AI engines, not vanity ranking positions. Traffic that arrives via AI citation converts roughly four times better than standard organic traffic and returns to the site roughly ten times more often.

A handful of citations on high-intent questions outperforms a broad ranking lift on generic keywords.

What's the one mistake that undoes all of this?

Publishing a spike of AI-drafted pages overnight. Google's systems flag sudden content velocity as a quality signal, and thin rewrites of competitor pages get filtered before they ever reach an AI engine's index.

Ramp volume gradually: five pages a month, rising to ten, then twenty-five, each one carrying genuine firm-specific expertise rather than a rewritten summary of what a competitor already said.

Firms that treat this as a 90-day operating change, not a one-off audit, are the ones showing up when a prospective client asks an AI which firms to call first.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO and how is it different from SEO?

GEO optimises a page for being quoted inside an AI answer. SEO optimises a page for ranking in the list of links below or around that answer.

How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

A practical starting sequence takes about 90 days: fix crawlability and answer-first pages, build a focused content cluster, clean up off-site listings and test the same client questions regularly.

Do I need to rebuild my website for GEO?

No. Most firms need answer-first rewrites of existing pages, structured data, crawlability checks and stronger off-site proof rather than a full rebuild.

Where do most AI citations for firms come from?

Many citations come from sources the firm does not own, including directories, review sites, comparison pages and industry press. Consistent details across those sources help establish trust.
